Stainless steel (SS) flanges are mechanical components used to connect pipes, valves, and pumps in a piping system, providing a secure, leak-proof junction. They are highly valued for their corrosion resistance, ability to handle extreme temperatures, and high tensile strength.
Common Material Grades
The selection of grade depends on the environment and specific industrial needs:
  • Grade 304/304L: The most common grade, offering good overall corrosion resistance and formability. It is ideal for food processing, pharmaceuticals, and mild atmospheric conditions.
  • Grade 316/316L: Contains 2-3% molybdenum, which enhances resistance to chlorides and salts. Often called "marine grade," it is preferred for chemical processing, oil and gas, and seawater applications.
  • Specialty Grades: Other available materials include high-temperature grades like SS 321 or higher corrosion-resistant alloys like 904L and Duplex for extreme environments.
Types of Stainless Steel Flanges
Different designs suit various pressure and assembly requirements:
  • Weld Neck (WN): Features a long tapered hub that is butt-welded to the pipe. It is the best choice for high-pressure and extreme-temperature systems.
  • Slip-On (SO): Slides over the pipe and is welded both inside and outside. It is cost-effective and easier to align, typically used for lower-pressure applications.
  • Blind (BL): A solid disc with no bore used to seal the end of a piping system.
  • Socket Weld (SW): The pipe is inserted into a socket before welding. These are designed for small-diameter, high-pressure pipes.
  • Threaded (TH): Screws directly onto the pipe without welding, making it ideal for low-pressure systems or areas where welding is hazardous.
  • Lap Joint (LJ): Used with a stub-end fitting, allowing the flange to rotate for easy bolt alignment; perfect for systems needing frequent disassembly.

Standards and Pressure Ratings
  • Dimensional Standards: Most SS flanges follow ASME B16.5 (for sizes 1/2" to 24") or ASME B16.47 (for larger diameters up to 60").
  • Material Standards: Typically comply with ASTM A182, which specifies requirements for forged or rolled stainless steel piping components.
  • Pressure Classes: Rated from Class 150 up to Class 2500. A higher class number indicates a thicker, heavier flange capable of withstanding more pressure.
  • Facing Types: Common faces include Raised Face (RF) for standard sealing, Flat Face (FF) for low-pressure systems, and Ring Type Joint (RTJ) for very high-pressure applications.
