A shunt passer is a specialized, often malleable, surgical tool used in neurosurgery to create a subcutaneous tunnel for passing shunt catheters (tubing) between incisions, primarily during ventriculoperitoneal (VP) or lumboperitoneal shunt procedures. It minimizes surgical time, reduces the need for multiple incisions, and helps prevent valve reversal by allowing accurate tunneling.

Creating Subcutaneous Tunnels:
It is passed beneath the skin to connect the head/neck incision to the abdominal or thoracic incision, allowing the distal catheter to be guided through without extensive tissue dissection.

VP Shunt Placement:
Used to tunnel the catheter from the cranial burr hole to the abdominal cavity to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Lumboperitoneal Shunt Stabilization:
Assists in securely placing the valve in the superficial fascial layer, improving stability.

Reduced Operative Time:
Speeds up the procedure by replacing the need for multiple incisions or manual tunneling, reducing overall operation time to as little as 10–15 minutes.
