Innovations
We successfully made high-quality vermicompost right at home using earthworms. First, we took a large plastic bin and drilled small holes in it for proper air circulation. Then, we created a comfortable bedding for our worms using shredded cardboard, newspaper, and dry leaves, making sure to moisten it with water until it felt like a damp sponge. Next, we introduced red wiggler earthworms into their new home and started feeding them our kitchen waste, such as vegetable peels, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds. We strictly avoided meat, dairy, and oils to prevent any bad smells. We always covered the food scraps with a light layer of dry bedding to keep flies away and kept the bin in a cool, dark corner. Over the next two to three months, the worms digested the waste and turned it into dark, crumbly, and nutrient-rich soil. Finally, we gently separated the worms and harvested our fresh, homemade fertilizer for our plants.
